Position Overview:
As a conductor, you will play a vital role within the railway industry, operating under the framework of a union agreement. This position involves working as a key member of a train crew responsible for switching rail cars and managing train movements within rail yards. Safety is paramount, and you will need to be prepared for unscheduled shifts, extended periods away from home, and outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including walking up to 10 kilometers daily on uneven terrain, and lifting objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Availability for unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 environment, including up to 12-hour shifts on days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to report to work within a two-hour window after scheduled rest periods.
  • Strong focus, attention to detail, and multitasking abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to provide clear instructions via radio.
  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Must pass required physical tasks, written exams, and safety instructions in English.
  • Minimum age of 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in train or yard service based on seniority.
  • Follow specific instructions regarding train routes and movements.
  • Coordinate the switching of rail cars, including coupling and uncoupling.
  • Observe and relay signals affecting train movement.
  • Provide flag protection and relay signals in emergencies.
  • Complete forms, train orders, and switch lists, ensuring clear reports.
  • Handle emergencies and apply first aid techniques.

Training:
CPKC provides 16 weeks of paid in-class and field training, covering safety practices, rules, and operations. You’ll earn 80% of the job rate during classroom training ($188.23/day), increasing to 90% upon successful completion ($211.76/day). Expect to earn around $85,000 in your first year as a qualified conductor.

Medical Requirements:
As this is a safety-critical position, candidates must complete a pre-employment medical assessment, including physical, vision, hearing, and drug tests.

Background Investigations:
Successful candidates will undergo a criminal history check, education verification, and driver’s license verification.
